A wedge is a simple machine that increases force by reducing the area. The blade of an axe is an example of a wedge. When the blade of an axe is swung into a log, the force of the swing is transferred into the wood. Although the movement of the splitting wood is smaller than the distance that the blade moved, the force is greater.
