The job descriptions below are for both Tufts students (work-study or non work-study) and full-time professional staff positions. Part-time jobs for students are available throughout the academic year and can be viewed by clicking on the Part-Time Jobs tab. Undergraduate Assistant Program in Engineering Education

The Undergraduate Assistant Program in Engineering Education will involve a number of undergraduate engineering students in a variety of educationally-themed engineering projects. Students will select from an array of projects to work on ranging from developing educational technologies (see www.designcompass.org or www.samanimation.com), work in engineering education research (CEEO Integrating Engineering and Literacy project), or other projects at the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (see www.ceeo.tufts.edu/). In addition to working on these projects, students will come together in regular meetings to discuss educational topics related to their projects. We expect all students will have opportunities to interact with students or teachers through their project work whether they be as clients, test users, or research subjects. The goal is to expose students to the interdisciplinary nature of engineering and have students work on  products or research that will impact K-16 classrooms.

Position level: Undergraduate

Work dates needed: October - December  (possibilities for additional summer work)

Pay amount:  $11/hour

Weekly Hourly commitment: 5-10 hours

Qualifications: 

Qualifications will vary depending upon project. In applying, applicants should highlight their skills and expertise in programming, computer programs (i.e., AutoCAD), electronics, mechanics, etc.

 

Graduate Research Assistant

The Center for Engineering Education and Outreach is hiring a Graduate Research Assistant to work on new Digital Workbook Software. The software will aid collaboration and sharing of data within classrooms. The Research Assistant will help with interface design, development, testing, deployment and associated research surrounding the platform.

Position level: Graduate Student

Work dates needed: year round

Pay amount: Standard Graduate Student Rate

Weekly Hourly commitment: 20 hours/week

-- experience/developing preferred learning environment

 

Research Assistant

Positions Available: 2-3
Hours: 6-12 hours per week (Flexible hours M-F, 9-5)
Salary: $11/hr
Description: Help with processing of data for educational research project.
Responsibilities include:
      -Categorizing, coding and organizing video.
      -Transcription of Video Data
      -Scanning and Organizing of Student Work
      -Data entry (consent forms, survey data)
      -Video Taping of Classrooms (must complete background check)

Must be highly organized, self motivated, and have good communication skills (verbal and written). Open to undergraduate and graduate students.  Great opportunity to engage in qualitative research.

Education Engineer

Description: Help engineer various solutions for an educational research project.
Responsibilities include:
      -Researching current state of the art data collection technlogies
      -Understanding the problem (video transcription, scanning, videotaping, etc.)
      -Prototyping and testing solutions

Alumni Database Administrator    

From June 15 to August 15, student will work 5-10 hours/week working on updating alumni database by doing data entry, tracking down new information such as phone numbers, email addresses and addresses, contacting alumni by phone and email to find out current career and helping organize alumni newsletter templates. They will need to know how to use Photoshop, Word and Excel. Will need to be willing to learn how to use Bento software and feel comfortable using Mac. Previous experience with data entry is a plus. Must be able to work independently! Pay rate is $10.50/hour.

 

W-STOMP Fellow (2 positions)

W-STOMP is an outreach program for Medford, Somerville and Boston, 4th and 5th grade teachers. STOMP (Student Teacher Outreach Mentorship Program) is Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) signature outreach program that places undergraduate Tufts students (STOMP Fellows) in local classrooms to support K-12 teachers engaging in teaching engineering.  W-STOMP is an 18-month project funded by the Verizon Foundation, to focus on engaging women in science and engineering.   The program will provide professional development to educators, year round classroom support, and a special engineering program for 4th and 5th grade girls in Summer 2012.

For the Summer of 2012, Tufts CEEO is looking for two undergraduate students to develop core resources for the W-STOMP summer camps that address engaging 4th through 6th grade female students in engineering. W-STOMP Fellows will support up to 3 weeks of W-STOMP camps. One is currently scheduled for July 30th-August 3rd. Summer W-STOMP Fellows will also work on developing curriculum for use in STOMP classrooms, STOMP training materials, and assist in W-STOMP research activities.

Requirements:

• Undergraduate student status

• Have completed at least 1 semester of STOMP or equivalent STEM-based outreach

• Strong Communication Skills

• Ability to work independently

• Strong Presentation and Teaching Skills

• MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

• Experience with LEGO NXT Hardware and Software

• Must be available for week of July 30th -August 3rd

Full-Time Staff Positions

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

The Engineering Research Program (group that develops educational technologies) within the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) is looking for an entry level Software Developer to assist with the design, development, and implementation of a new web-based software for delivering curriculum and increasing collaboration amongst students within a classroom.  Since this project is just starting and will be continuing through to a polished, distributed platform, the applicant will need to be comfortable with the software development process at all stages: from early design and feature specification, to coding and creation, to testing and refinement, and to finalization and deployment.

Position level: Full-time
Work dates needed: Present through August 31, 2013
Pay amount: based on experience
Weekly Hourly commitment: 9-5 M-F

Basic Requirements:

o   Bachelor’s degree in Computer science or related field

o   One to two (1-2) years of related experience

o   Web based technologies (HTML 5, JavaScript, PHP)

o   Must have attention to detail, the ability to work independently, work closely in an open cubicle environment with other staff, students and faculty and not be easily distracted (as CEEO is a very busy environment)

Preferred Qualifications:

o   Additional computer skills desired:

o   additional web-based programming experience

o   understanding of platform and browser compatibilities

o   knowledge of alternative deployment devices (e.g. handhelds)

o   advanced algorithmic development

o   complex data structure understanding

o   experience with scalable development projects

o   solid knowledge of object oriented programming

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

This project requires readiness to work beyond the normally scheduled day when support is needed during an off hours event.  Additionally, the applicant for this position needs to be available for both shorter and longer periods of travel during all stages of the development cycle to work with CEEO development and distribution partners, gather research, and perform in-classroom testing of products.
