Student Chapter Constitution
Preamble
We, the students of Tufts University, in order to establish
a student based organization committed to furthering education in engineering
and engineering technology, do hereby establish this constitution. Our mission
will consist of:
· Developing
relationships with local K-12 schools and aid them in fostering student
interest in engineering
· Providing opportunities
for future engineering educators to develop teaching and research skills
· Providing STEM
undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to learn about engineering
education research
· Assist and
encourage minorities and women to study and seek careers in the STEM fields
Article I - Name
The name of this organization shall be the Tufts University
American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Student Chapter. The chapter
will be sponsored by the Tufts University Center for Engineering Education and
Outreach.
Article II - Purpose
The purposes of the organization shall be to:
1. Improve the
technological literacy of the general public
2. Change the
way students of all ages, gender, and ethnicity learn engineering
3. Encourage K-12
students to consider studying engineering
4. Enhance the
teaching and presentation skills of prospective engineering educators (at all
levels)
5. Inform and
educate students and faculty about engineering education pedagogies and
research
6. Provide
undergraduate and graduate students with engineering real world learning
opportunities
7. Develop the
skills needed to conduct engineering education research
Article III - Membership
Section 1: Student membership is open to all undergraduate
and graduate students at Tufts University with primary emphasis on graduate
students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
disciplines
Section 2: Associate memberships shall be open to all staff
and faculty at Tufts University with primary emphasis on individuals working in
the STEM and Education fields. Associate members may not vote or hold office,
but may have all other privileges of a student member.
Section 3: All staff and faculty at Tufts University are
eligible to be considered for the Tufts University ASEE Student Chapter
advisory committee.
Section 4: All members must have record of their student
chapter membership on file and must be members of the national ASEE.
Section 5: Any member may terminate their membership at any
time with a written notification to the Secretary.
Section 6: The removal of any member shall be initiated by
submitting a petition to the Secretary. The petition must have signatures from
at least twenty percent of the eligible voters of the student chapter. The
member shall be removed form the chapter upon a 2/3 majority vote and the
approval of the faculty advisor.
Article IV - Executives
Section 1: The offices of President, Vice-President,
Secretary, and Treasurer shall be members of the Executive Board.
Section 2: Any department not represented on the Executive
Board has the option of electing a representative. The representative can be a
faculty member, staff, or graduate student who will have full voting rights of
an Executive Board member.
Section 2: The Executive Board members shall be elected by a
majority vote at an election held in April of each year.
Section 3: The Faculty Advisor shall be selected by the President
or by a majority vote from the Executive Board.
Section 4: The Faculty Advisor(s) shall have an indefinite
term in office.
Article V - Voting Procedure and Rules
Each member shall have one vote.
Article VI - Officers and Duties
Section 1: President
1. Formulating
a yearly organizational agenda for the organization.
2. Insuring
that chapter activities fall within the organizational goals as stated in the
Constitution.
3. Presiding
over all regular and special meetings for the organization.
4. Creating
permanent or temporary positions to assist in performing the duties of the
office.
5. Creating
committees as needed.
Section 2: Vice President
1. Assisting
the President in insuring that the objectives are met.
2. Assuming
the duties of President in his/her absence.
3. Presiding
over at least one general meeting per semester.
4. Acting as a
liaison between the Executive Board and all regular, special, and temporary
committees.
5. Creating
permanent or temporary positions, with approval from the President, to assist
in performing the duties of the office.
Section 3: Secretary
1. Recording
events and activities performed by the organization. A
2. Preparing
an annual report to inform the parent organization and the student members on
the accomplishments and future planned activities.
3. Keeping
minutes during the executive, general, and committee meetings, and to document
a record of the minutes for the ASEE Student Chapter.
4. Maintaining
record of the books posted in the library by the organization.
5. Creating
permanent or temporary positions, with approval from the President, to assist
in performing the duties of the office.
6. Keeping
records of all student members, updated yearly.
Section 6: Treasurer
1. Compiling
and presenting a financial report of the previous year.
2. Setting up
a budget for the upcoming year.
3. Overseeing
fund raising activities.
4. Keeping a
record of the ASEE Student Chapter funds.
5. Creating
permanent or temporary positions, with approval from the President, to assist
in performing the duties of the office.
Article VII - Amendments
Section 1: All amendments are to be submitted in writing to
the President and Secretary to be read at a meeting. The amendment can be voted
on in the same meeting.
Section 2: Amendments shall be made by a two-thirds majority
vote by the Executive Board.
Section 3: All amendments to the Constitution and bylaws are
subject to the approval of the Dean of the School of Engineering and
Technology.
Article VIII - Bylaws
Section 1: Elections shall be conducted by written ballots.
Absentee ballots shall be allowed.
Section 2: No fee may be charged as dues.
Section 3: A vacancy of the Presidency shall be filled by
the Vice-President. The Vice-Presidency shall then be filled by a majority
election by the Executive Board.
Section 4: Any non-attendance of the meetings for a long
period of time will be considered as a voluntary resignation
Section 5: A 2/3 majority vote of the Executive Board may
replace any officer for poor attendance to the meeting.
